How to Use Morocco’s Official Geological Maps for Mineral Exploration

Good exploration begins by organising existing knowledge before collecting new data. Morocco’s official geoscience infrastructure gives exploration teams access to geological maps, mineral-occurrence information, geochemical and geophysical products, guides and thematic publications.

Start with the national geoscientific infrastructure

The Ministry’s Infrastructure Géoscientifique Nationale portal presents available mapping under the National Geology Plan 2021–2030. Users can search by region, priority area and map scale. This is useful for understanding which official products cover a project area and where higher-resolution information may be limited.

Combine four evidence layers

1. Geological maps

Geological maps provide lithology, stratigraphy, structures and regional context. They help an exploration team ask whether the mapped rocks and tectonic setting are compatible with the target deposit model.

2. Mineral occurrences

The official Carte des Gîtes Minéraux du Maroc allows users to explore mineral occurrences by region and geographic coordinates. Occurrences are evidence of mineralisation, not proof of an economic deposit. Their value increases when they are evaluated in a coherent mineral-system framework.

3. Geochemistry and geophysics

The government catalogue includes geochemical and geophysical map products. Geochemistry can indicate element dispersion and anomalies; geophysics can reveal structures, lithological contrasts and concealed features. Both require scale-aware interpretation and field validation.

4. Geological and mining guides

The New Geological and Mining Guides of Morocco compile regional geology, field routes and mining districts. They are valuable for regional understanding and academic orientation, but current exploration decisions should also use recent field observations and project-specific datasets.

A practical GIS workflow

  1. Define a common coordinate reference system and project boundary.
  2. Catalogue each source, date, scale and confidence level.
  3. Digitise or import geology, faults, intrusions and occurrences.
  4. Add geochemistry, geophysics, remote sensing, topography and access.
  5. Develop deposit-model criteria and weight evidence transparently.
  6. Generate targets, rank uncertainty and design field checks.

Common mistakes

Do not treat maps produced at different scales as equally precise. Do not use a mineral-occurrence point as a resource estimate. Do not assume that absence of mapped mineralisation means absence of potential. Most importantly, do not skip field verification.

Need a GIS-based opportunity review?

We can organise official and project datasets, build an exploration GIS, identify evidence gaps and translate the result into field priorities.
