Demand linked to electrification, renewable energy, fertiliser security and advanced manufacturing has increased investor interest in critical raw materials. In Morocco, the right starting point is not a fashionable commodity list. It is a geological question: which mineral systems could operate in a given region, and what evidence would reveal them?
Use a mineral-systems approach
A mineral system evaluates the processes required to form and preserve a deposit: source, energy, fluid or melt pathways, depositional traps and post-mineral preservation. This approach is especially useful at regional scale because many critical-mineral targets are concealed, poorly exposed or not captured by historical exploration focused on other commodities.
Build targets from multiple datasets
- Regional geology: terranes, basins, intrusions, metamorphism and tectonic history.
- Structures: faults, shear zones, contacts and permeability architecture.
- Geochemistry: target and pathfinder elements, background populations and dispersion processes.
- Geophysics: magnetic, radiometric, gravity or electrical responses that may map geology and alteration.
- Remote sensing: lithological and alteration indicators, structure and access.
- Mineral occurrences: evidence of fertility that must be checked against scale and data quality.
Morocco’s research capacity is evolving
UM6P’s Geology and Sustainable Mining Institute identifies geoscience exploration and mineral systems and critical raw materials as research themes. Moroccan universities also provide training and research in mineral resources, geochemistry, metallogeny, structural geology, remote sensing and mining engineering.
Investor caution
“Critical” describes economic and supply-chain importance, not automatic project profitability. Every target still requires mineralogical, metallurgical, environmental, infrastructure and market validation.
